The keyboard act as an essential part of the computing system which is made on the lying concept of typewriter keyboard which had arrangement of buttons or keys working as electronic switches and mechanical levers.

Users of electronic devices or systems must know that keyboard is a input device of the computing system. The keyboard is having characters engraved and printed on the keys as every pressing key typically reflects single written symbol. Whereas most of the keys of the keyboard produces letters, numbers, and signs. Not onlythis most of keys are made for showing actions and computer commands.

Normally the keyboard helps in typing text and numbers in word processors, text editor and many other programmes. Now there are lots of changes in the functioning of keys of the keyboard as it depend on the software. So the computer keyboard distinguishes every physical key than the other one reporting the whole keypresses to one’s controlling software. There are lots of best forms of keyboard usage only the thing is that user must know how to use them. Likewise keyboards plays and important role in computer gaming withthe usage of regualr keyboards or having keyboard having special gaming features. One should also know that the keyboard helps in giving command to the operating system of the computer like windows’ control-alt-delete combination bringing up the task window and shutting down the machine.

One will find that in a standard keyboards used for desktop computers, 101-key U.S traditional keyboards, 104-key windows keyboards has alphabetic characters, punctuation symbols, numbers and variety of function keys. One will also see that in keyboards of laptops and notebook computers shows shorter travel distance for the keystroke along with reduced set of keys. When one buys computer system and laptops get booklets for understanding the keys of the keyboard in a very wider way so that one c an use them properly. Before buying any electrical equipments having keyboards then one should study the functioning and operation’s ability, specific features of the keyboard to get more benefitted.

In computer terminology a keyboard is an input device, modeled on the lines of a typewriter keyboard. It contains an array of buttons or keys which act as electronic switches. Keyboards contain characters which are engraved or printed on its keys. When a user presses a key it typically corresponds to a single written symbol. However, for printing special symbols a user has to hold several keys in a sequence. While various keyboard keys are able to produce letters, signs or numbers, they also produce special characters by pressing keys simultaneously or carry different computer commands.

In general practice a keyboard is used to type text, numbers, special characters and various other symbols in a word processor, text editor or other programs. In contemporary computers, the elucidation of key presses is most often left to the software. The keyboards attached to the computer differentiate each physical key from each other and reports all key presses to the software controller. Keyboards are also utilized for gaming purposes and several keyboards have custom design applied to its interface each uniquely tailored for its own supported game. Today, wireless computer keyboards have also become popular.

With the help of keyboards various commands are applied to the operating system of a computer. For example through the windows command sequence the “Control – Alt – Delete” combination on a keyboard shuts down the machine. There are a variety of keyboards available like the standard keyboard which contains 101-key US traditional keyboard and 104-key windows keyboard. A standard keyboard contains alphabetic characters, numbers, punctuation symbols and a variety of other functions. Meanwhile the common international 102/105 keyboard contains a smaller ‘left shift’ key along with some other symbols most often Z or Y.

Laptop or notebook keyboards have shorter keystrokes with a reduced number of keys. Most of these notebook keyboards do not contain numeric keypads. The function keys are located differently as compared to standard or full-sized keyboards.

There are also multimedia keyboards available which contains special keys and are used to access web, music, volume control, mute button etc. These keyboards also provide gaming functions like pressing ‘Ctrl + Shift + Y’ is generally used to start certain computer games. In word processing, graphic designing and other editing programs a combination of keystrokes is used from keyboards to start certain functions of the respective program.

Now-a-days thumb-sized or QWERTY keyboards have been introduced in PDAs, cell phones, etc. The size of the keyboards is drastically reduced by removing the numeric keyboard and numpad. Another way in reducing the size of a keyboard is reducing keys from the keyboard and applying a set of keys at a stretch to get the desired command.

Buying tips: Keyboard • Check whether your keyboard uses a PS2 connection or USB 2.0 connection? • If you intend to use your keyboard for gaming purposes search for keyboards tailored to that specific keyboard, for example World of Warcraft keyboards by Ideazon. • If you often move your keyboard around, then choose a wireless keyboard instead. • If you use your computer frequently you can consider getting an ergonomic keyboard. These keyboards are so designed to bring comfort to a user.

Electronic keyboard synthesizers have come a long way since their inception. Few people know that the first electronic synthesizer was invented in the late 1800s. This model was, of course, only a very rough precursor to the musical synthesizers of today. Modern synthesizers are capable of producing a variety of sounds by generating and combining signals of different frequencies. This process is called synthesis, and it can be divided into five distinct types: wavetable, physical modeling, digital, fingerboard and software (digital).
Wavetable synthesis uses an existing sound to create a digital recording, which is known as a sample. This recording can be replayed at a range of pitches. While other synthesis methods use oscillator circuits to produce repetitive electronic signals, wavetable synthesis uses sample playback. If an artist wants to change the musical tone of a passage, the speed of the playback is quickened or slowed accordingly. For instance, in order to alter the frequency of a sound one octave higher, it is played at double speed. Wavetable synthesis is used in certain digital music synthesizers to implement real-time additive synthesis and direct digital synthesis with minimum hardware.
Physical modeling synthesis uses a set of equations and algorithms to simulate the desired physical source of a sound. In order to generate a specific sound, an initial set of parameters is run through the physical simulation. Physical modeling is based on the concepts of acoustics and synthesis. The development of the Karplus-Strong algorithm and the increase in digital signal processor (DSP) power in the late 1980s allowed for the commercial implementations of modern synthesizer physical modeling.
Digital synthesis involves using a digital oscillator to generate a digital sample that corresponds to a sound pressure at a given sampling frequency. In most basic instances, the digital oscillator is modulated by a counter. For each generated sample, the counter is advanced by an amount determined by the frequency of the oscillator. The values are recorded by the oscillator’s counter, mixed, processed and sent to a digital-to-analog converter. The resulting analog signal is then sent to an analog amplifier, which converts the signal to sound.
Fingerboard synthesis utilizes a ribbon controller, which is a user interface used to control the parameters of analog synthesizers. A ribbon controller is similar to the touchpad of a laptop computer in that it registers and translates the motion and position of the user’s fingers. However, most ribbon controllers only register linear motion. Although it could hypothetically be used to alter and control any sound parameter, a ribbon controller is most commonly associated with pitch control or pitch bending.
Digital synthesis is possible on most modern, high-speed personal computers through a variety of available software. DSP algorithms are commonplace, and they allow for the creation of fairly accurate simulations of physical acoustic sources or electronic sound generators. Some commercial programs offer quite lavish and complex models of classic synthesizers. Other programs permit the user complete control of all aspects of digital music synthesis, although such programs can be expensive and difficult to use.

Even non-musicians are familiar with keyboard instruments. Few people reach adulthood without having had at least one opportunity to bang on a keyboard of some type. However, many people (including musicians) aren’t aware of the history behind keyboard instruments. Their evolution is both fascinating and surprising.
Many people mistakenly believe that the harpsichord was the earliest keyboard instrument. Harpsichords were undoubtedly a precursor to the piano. However, the pipe organ actually predates the harpsichord by some 1100 years. In fact, the pipe organ was the only keyboard instrument until the invention of the clavichord and the harpsichord.
The earliest pipe organs were massive structures. Upon their emergence, few companies actually made pipe organs. Even fewer people were trained to install and repair them. Their size and complexity made them difficult to work with, although the sound they produced was magnificent. Pipe organs often contained multiple keyboards to operate the many pipes and produce the rich sounds that the instrument is associated with. Naturally, this was not the type of instrument that the average person played at home. Most pipe organs were located in churches and concert halls.
Eventually, more compact versions were invented. Pipe organs evolved into regular organs, which most people of today are familiar with. They were more easily afforded by smaller parishes and even private owners. They were also much more compact and easier to repair.
The clavichord entered the scene in the early 15th century. It first emerged as a “practice instrument.” Since not all musicians could afford or had easy access to an organ, the clavichord became a convenient alternative. It provided organists a means for practicing at home without having to go to a church or other location to find an organ. Clavichords were smaller than today’s piano and may be compared to today’s smaller keyboard synthesizers, minus the need for electricity.
It was likely very shortly after that the harpsichord was invented. The harpsichord more closely resembled today’s piano. This may be part of the reason that people believe the harpsichord was the first keyboard instrument. Modern pianos are based on a very similar design to its predecessors. Harpsichords, however, were much smaller (though larger than the clavichord). The harpsichord had many variations that operated on the same basic musical principles. Some of these include the virginal, the spinet and the clavicytherium.
Like music trends always do, the harpsichord fell out of fashion upon the advent of the piano. The piano, though usually a bit larger, produced a cleaner sound. Harpsichords became all but obsolete within just a few decades. Ironically, harpsichords have come back into fashion in recent years because of their unique and distinctive sound. They are often heard as part of the backup for many contemporary songs, though relatively few people actually own a genuine harpsichord.
The piano is by far the most common keyboard instrument today. They are found in nearly every school and church in North America, as well as in millions of private homes. Most every music student has at least some piano training. They are one of the easiest instruments to learn to play and provide a good musical basis for learning other instruments.
Of course, with an electronics-loving society came the natural evolution of the piano to a plug-in version. These are commonly referred to as synthesizers. Aside from the obvious difference from the piano in the requirement of electricity, synthesizers are capable of mimicking many different instruments. Even the most rudimentary of synthesizers usually have several different instrument modes. The more complex the machine, the more sounds it is able to reproduce. More expensive models are extremely complex and technical. Their technology is of such quality that it can be difficult to distinguish their sound from the actual instrument they are mimicking.
New advances in technology, especially in computers, are being made every year. How this will affect the further evolution of keyboard instruments remains to be seen. It appears, though, that the good old fashioned piano is here to stay for awhile.

The keyboard is among the most underappreciated and taken for granted component of the Personal Computer (PC) that we use everyday.
We are all creatures of habit. We generally use certain keys and not others in certain way.
What are the origins and history of the now current accepted PC computer keyboard?
Interestingly enough the standard keyboard layout did not originate in one fell swoop. It developed through three separate IBM keyboard projects and often involved mistakes and pitfalls along its evolutionary path.
Most keyboard setups have their direct origin in the original IBM keyboard – “The IBM Enhanced 101 Key Keyboard “which IBM set as the standard in the year of 1987. The Enhanced Keyboard was not the first but rather IBM’s third keyboard standard for PCs.
What were these previous frameworks of IBM keyboard models?
First the original IBM PC and XT keyboards had 83 keys. There were 10 function keys on the left side of the keyboard, a combined number pad and a cursor pad placed on the right hand side. The now called Control (Ctrl), Left Shift, and Alt keys were arranged in a line next to the function keys.
The Escape (Esc) as we know it was to the left of the numbers in the top row. To the right of the Right Shift Key, an unshifted asterisk key allowed the user to type the now common . without acrobatics. Between the tiny Left Shift key and the Zee key was a Backslash / Vertical key. The Enter key was narrow and vertically aligned and very easy to miss by most early PC users.
The design of this original IBM keyboard standard was a mixture of sensible and absurd keyboard layout decisions so much so that the admired components overshadowed the less thought out shortcomings and thus here we are today.
IBM’s next design was the original AT keyboard. This was somehow made incompatible with the earlier PC/XT design but a calculating user could reprogram in essence the newer keyboard to work.
The AT keyboard again had the then accepted ten function keys on the left, but exiled the Esc and the unshifted asterisk to the number pad. The Enter key was L-shaped and the Backsplash key, which now occupied the spot which used to be the left half of the Backspace key. Was reduced in size to the width of a single “alpha” key.
At some point when market forces pushed IBM to upgrade the venerable AT computer, it introduced the Enhanced model keyboard which was compatible with the original AT model, but had a drastically different layout. The ESC key and the 12 function keys were now along the top, the number pad was moved to the right. And a new cursor pad was placed between the alpha keys a number pad. The cursor pad ( which was actually split into two sets of keys ) consisted of four arrow keys in an inverted T at the bottom and a separate bank of 6 keys at the top: Ins ( Insert) , Del (Delete) , Home and End, and PgUp (Page up_ and PgDn ( Page down) .
What happened is that the computer users of the time disastrously started to press the Delete key when they meant end. There was virtually little memory, by today’s standards’ hence no advanced features of rescue that we take for granted today. A computer user who may have spent hours typing a major endeavor such as master’s thesis may have seen his hard work disappear into never never land.
It did not take too long for the complaints to arrive at IBM head office to rectify the situation. “Leave well enough alone “was the refrain. And the Backspace key returned to its original double width. The backslash key now occupied a single row. Caps lock migrated to the old side of the Ctrl key, and twin Ctrl and Alt keys flanked the spacebar.
The Del key though remained in its now current place although in some keyboards it is now double sized.
Like it or not this layout has become the standard by which we live with our computer enhanced lives.
The keyboard is among the most underappreciated and taken for granted component in our every day computer lives. We seldom stop to think why certain keys are laid out in the given way. Like it or not we owe a debt to thoughtfulness and thoroughness of the original IBM PC project engineers.

A computer’s keyboard is as important to the computer as any other part of the computer setup. After all, the keyboard is what you use to input your data, whether it is while you’re surfing the net or writing an essay.
With that said, there a few things listed below that our product specialists recommend our customers to consider when purchasing this important part of their computer setup.
Ergonomics: It is important that you find a keyboard that is comfortable for you. This can prevent things such as Carpal-Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) and Repetitive Stress Injuries (RSI). You might want to consider getting a keyboard that comes with a wrist rest, or buy one along with the keyboard if one isn’t included. A wrist rest will keep your wrists at a proper angle, which can greatly reduce your chances of getting RSI or CTS.
QWERTY vs. Natural: There are two basic designs when it comes to keyboards, either the QWERTY design or the “natural” design. The QWERTY design is what you are used to seeing, with the keys laid out straight across the board. The “natural” design splits the home row in two, allowing for a more ergonomic angle when typing. The “natural” keyboards are usually a bit more expensive than the traditional QWERTY keyboards, but the QWERTY keyboard is the most popular. So which ones better? It is only a matter of personal preference.
Wired/Wireless: Decide how you want the keyboard to connect to your computer. You have two options, and those are wired or wireless. Both have their own advantages and disadvantages and choosing between the two is once again a matter of personal preference. Thinking about where or how you will be using the keyboard can help you determine which one is better for you. For example, if you plan to use the keyboard with a computer that is connected to your home theater system, you may want to get a wireless keyboard so you don’t have to sit next to the computer when watching movies or listening to music.
Hotkeys: Many keyboards today come with extra “hot keys” at the top. These “hot keys” can do a wide range of things from controlling the computers volume, to opening your e-mail with the touch of a button. Often times these buttons are fully programmable, which can make your computing experience easier and more efficient by having the shortcuts you personally use most at your fingertips. You should decide whether or not you want these extra controls at an early stage of the buying process. This will help you narrow down on which keyboard best suits your needs.
Extra Features: Some keyboards come with extra features such as a USB hub, which allows you to connect low-power devices to the keyboard for desktop convenience. Decide whether or not these types of features are important to you, or if they are just “extras” that will only add to your cost.
Carpal-Tunnel Syndrome (CTS): A common disorder in the wrist and hand; symptoms include pain and weakness in the muscles caused by pressure on the median nerve in the wrist area.
Repetitive Stress Injuries (RSI): A type of injury where soft tissue in the body, such as muscles, nerves, tendons, and joints become irritated or inflamed.
Definitions:
Ergonomics: The science of the human body doing work related tasks in order to reduce the risk of injury.
QWERTY Keyboard: Refers to the standard data entry keyboard. Term comes from the first six letters at the upper left of the keyboard.
Natural Keyboard: Refers to the type of keyboard that is split at the middle of the home row.
USB: Connection port on a computer that is universally compatible with many types of electronic devices.
