Every new technology goes through a marketing life cycle. It’s new, it builds a niche, and if it’s lucky it becomes indispensable. That’s where the touchpad keyboard is heading. Soon a touchpad keyboard may be as essential as a computer mouse.

The touchpad keyboard came in big with the laptop computer. Now it is becoming a regular addition to desktop computers as well. There are even peripheral touchpad systems on the market that you can plug into USB ports. And these new products are coming out even though the touchpad keyboard has several blaring weaknesses.

What determines which technologies become indispensable, like the touchpad keyboard, and which get thrown off to the side? I think it has more to do with converging technology than the merits of individual technologies.

Just think of the computer mouse. When it first came out it was hard to control and hard to follow that little arrow across the screen. It took me weeks to get the double click down. And besides, I didn’t see anything wrong with my joystick.

What made the computer mouse such a hit was that you had to have it for Windows. There was no need with DOS. And my joystick was perfect for all my gaming needs. Then, someone decided a computer mouse would be easier to navigate a computer screen with than a joystick, so it caught on. And now that we’re all used to the computer mouse, it’s hard to think of using a computer without one. That three-inch square section of our desk has become a microcosm of our computer screen, and in fact the universe. You push it forward and the arrow goes up. Nothing could be more natural.

The touchpad keyboard started off on the right foot because it followed this world-as-a-plain formula. Not everything was so successful. Have you ever used a trackball? Have you ever heard of it? If not, I wouldn’t be surprised. The trackball is a wonderful invention, not much different from a computer mouse. It’s kind of like an upside down computer mouse that sits on you desk top. You push the ball around with your fingers to move the arrow. It’s actually quite comfortable and easy to use once you get used to it. In fact, because it takes up less desk space and it’s more ergonomic, I think it’s superior to a computer mouse.

But trackballs are hard to find anywhere because they don’t follow the formula. You push your finger and the ball just spins. Where is our 3-inch x 3-inch universe? It’s gone.

So the touchpad keyboard was primed and ready when the laptop computer came out. It was not only easy to figure out, because of its similar world view to the computer mouse, it was portable. It was perfect for the laptop. There were a few models of laptops that came with trackballs, but they didn’t last. Soon everyone got used to the idea of the universe as a touchpad keyboard. It doesn’t matter that the touchpad is easily scratched, sloppy with large fingers, and prone to false positive clicking. It’s what we have and we are used to it.

That’s why we are all so excited to use the new versions of the touchpad keyboard for desk top computers. It’s the natural next step. Could it be that the touchpad keyboard will eventually replace the computer mouse?

I don’t know about that, but the touchpad keyboard is definitely here to stay. And, as with all technology, the touchpad keyboard will get better as it goes. The computer mouse was a pain in the neck to use when its little wheels inside got dirty or the cord got tangled with stuff on your desk. Now technology has corrected those problems with light sensors and the cordless computer mouse.

I’m sure the touchpad keyboard will go through similar changes that will correct its problems. Maybe they will come with a finger puppet-like stylus for people like me with fat fingers to cut down on the slop. I know keys aren’t well suited for this. Maybe the newer touchpad keyboard products have already dealt with the common problems facing the first touchpad keyboards. I guess I’ll just have to try one and find out for myself.

If you have ever been in a room that was full of people doing nothing but typing, it can be almost deafening, that is, if those people are using old school keyboards. If all those people were suddenly using <a title=”Touchpad keyword at Cirque!” onClick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/article_exit_link');" href=http://www.cirque.com/uploads/products/touchpad_keyboard.html>touchpad keyboard – say like the iPhone touchscreens, it would be remarkably quiet.A person’s profession, habits and preferences all make up reasons why a person will choose one keyboard over another. A Variety of Keyboards for A Variety of Careers/Needs• Waterproof Keyboards: spill proof and even cleaning disinfectant proof touch pads for gamers as well as dentists and other medical fields are popular. Studies say that a keyboard has more germs on them then toilet seats, with waterproof keyboards, a dentist can have his keyboard for making notes and performing other functions, all while in an environment prone to splashes. For the writer who thinks best in the bathtub- this keyboard makes the ideal bath buddy.• Model M: call it nostalgic or plain lazy there are some people who will not give up their classic IMB Model M clackity keyboard. The Model M was created in the 1980s to resemble the feel of typing on a typewriter. For many writers who feel like they are not really typing unless they can hear the keys clacking, this is an ideal keyboard for noise- allowing typists to emulate the sound of a journalism newsroom. • Gamers: Ultra durable keyboards like the professional gaming keyboard with quiet click, 18K gold plated connectors to increase speed and a guaranteed 50 million keystroke warrenty. These types of keyboards are often used for military and other high performance industries, besides intense gamers. • Military Night Vision keyboards: Not sure what the popularity or the need for a night vision keyboard is besides actual combat, but someone has built it and it is for sale. • Flexible on the Go: Great for automotive garages, dental and for journalists in remote locations. Flexible roll up keyboards can bend, fold and twist. They are made of silicone and can be rolled up in a tube. These popular keyboards come in a rainbow of colors and are found internationally. Ideal for wet or dusty environments. There are a multitude of uses for all of these interesting keyboard inventions. With touch technology, <a title=”Touchpad keyword at Cirque!” onClick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/article_exit_link');" href=http://www.cirque.com/uploads/products/touchpad_keyboard.html>touchpad keyboard, touch screen monitors and others are going to become much more popular as touch technology grows.

1. Durability

If you are using your new computer for work, home and family use as well as everyday emailing, you are going to need a touchpad keyboard made out of quality materials to last. With so many touchpad keyboards on the market, be sure to spend some quality time in an electronic store “test driving” keyboards.

?

2. Design

Depending on your business or need, the design of your touchpad keyboard needs to make sense. If you are a business traveler, you will no doubt need a laptop that has quite keys, a touchpad mouse built into the laptop to conserve space and most definitely a couple USB ports and possibly a docking station for your business needs. If the next touchpad keyboard you purchase is for a high-tech or medical business, you will to buy a water resistant and dust/particle resistant keyboard as your next purchase. What about an ergonomic keyboard or an ergonomic computer mouse? Depending on your preference, there are lots of keyboards out there that focus on wrist safety.

?

3. Color, Imprint Finish and Other Keyboard Finishes

Will the numbers and letters last on the keyboard finish? It may not seem like a lot to ask of a touchpad keyboard but if you are going to invest in a keyboard, you want it to last. Investing in a quality keyboard with imprint finish- which protects the text printed on the keys from rubbing off over time, is always something an avid computer user should keep an eye out for. Does color matter to you? Perhaps you haven’t thought about color before, but several companies are making custom keyboards with rainbow of different color choices to choose from.

?

4. Touch pad mouse Vs. Cord Mouse

On your mission to find the perfect keyboard, you should ask yourself whether you should get a touchpad keyboard with a touchpad computer mouse already built into the keyboard or if you would benefit more from a computer mouse that is separate from your computer keyboard.

?

5. Size

Again, depending on your computer needs, will you need a hand held computer more than a full desktop computer or a laptop? Most people want a full-size keyboard for typing even if their computer screen is small. Some touchpad keyboards can fold in half and some are even made of silicon and can be rolled up into a tube!

?

6. The Right Fit For You

At the end of the day, it comes down to what touchpad keyboard works for you. If you need a keyboard with quiet keys, or a touchpad keyboard for use in your dental office that needs be water resistant, or perhaps you are a mechanic that needs a touchpad keyboard that needs to withstand dust, grease as well as cordless, there are several options to choose from. The biggest gift you can give yourself is time to test drive all of the keyboard options that are out there. The worst thing would be to spend the money on a complete computer set and find that you have wrist discomfort, super loud clicking keys or the unique folding design really lacks in quality. Just like each of us use our computer keyboards differently, each of our keyboards should therefore be a little different.
